I combined competitive analysis and user research—reviewing apps, forums, and interviews with crypto beginners—to map their emotional journey and identify key friction points and unmet needs.

Competitive Analysis

I analyzed Web3 platforms like Base, Uniswap, MetaMask, Phantom, and Jupiter, focusing on wallet setup, education, and ownership clarity. Most either force early wallet setup or hide wallet info, causing confusion and anxiety from poorly timed education and transparency.

User Profile & Emotional Patterns

I focused on crypto beginners and cautious investors who are curious but sensitive to early wallet and custody decisions. Key insights that emerged include:

• Early wallet setup creates friction.
• Users want to experience value before taking custody.
• Clear ownership signals reduce drop-offs.

Design Goals

Help beginners and cautious investors buy crypto confidently by balancing ease of use with clear ownership. The MVP offers a mobile onboarding experience that reduces anxiety during first interaction, provide transparency and guide users through their first purchase.

Key UX Strategy

• Progressive Disclosure: Introduce complex concepts (wallet, seed phrase) at a natural points in the journey, rather than upfront or hidden.
• Contextual Guidance: Use interactive prompts to make education active.
• Trust First: Clarify ownership before asking for full custody.
• Emphasize Calm and Clarity: Show progress and clear next steps to reduce friction.

User Flow

I created a user flow mapping the journey of two sets of personas with the same goal: beginners receive step-by-step wallet education at key moments to build confidence before taking custody, while experienced users can quickly connect or create a wallet with clear ownership indicators.

Wireframing

I mapped primary flows—onboarding → funding → wallet creation → first purchase—and used low-fidelity sketches with usability testing to identify friction, comprehension, and emotional responses, guiding refinements before higher-fidelity design.

Branding & UI Decisions

Flux’s branding conveys clarity, trust, and approachability. The upward-arrow logo symbolizes growth, the blue palette evokes calm, and pastel accents soften the tone. Playful 3D illustrations make onboarding concepts tangible and friendly, while a bold, condensed sans-serif typeface adds strength and confidence.

High-Fidelity Prototype

Flux’s homepage highlights suggested actions. Beginners get step-by-step wallet guidance, while experienced users can skip steps. Clear instructions, transparent timelines, and suggested next actions keep the experience seamless. Light and dark modes offer flexible, accessible visuals.

Reflections & Take-aways

Working on Flux deepened my understanding of DeFi and its UX challenges. Despite its potential to democratize finance, steep learning curves, fragmented interfaces, and unclear risks overwhelm new users. The project also highlighted financial safety and human interaction, inspiring me to make DeFi more approachable through human-centered design.

Next Steps

• A/B test microcopy for different onboarding triggers.
• Expand educational overlays for advanced trading actions.
• Explore gamification or reward system for completing first trade and wallet setup.
• Monitor analytics for wallet setup conversion and user retention metrics.
